On 13th October we learned that key divisions of the police (Additional Director General of Police, Women Security and Anti Human Trafficking Department) would be launching Operation Storm Makers-2, OSM2,  a special project to combat human trafficking in Madhya Pradesh.  The police would be reopening old cases and arresting perpetrators that were out on bail or had evaded arrest previously and would register every new case in OSM2.  16th to 20th October were the dates slotted for OSM2. Along with the police and other NGOs Freedom Firm also participated in OSM2

On 16th October we met with the Assistant Inspector General of Police. We were assigned a dera (village) in Neemuch. We were familiar with this dera as we had worked in it before.  The dera had many minor girls who were being sexually exploited.  Pimps and brothel keepers had a well oiled network. The slightest police movement was recorded and the dera was immediately alerted.

The brothel

We were tracking 15 year old Raniya. Previously on four separate occasions along with the police we tried to rescue her, but due to some reason (usually a tip off) every attempt failed.

On 17th October, we met with the Additional Superintendent of Police, ASP,  in Neemuch for his support to initiate a rescue. Due to some other official work, he wasn’t able to initiate a raid.   He spoke to the Superintendent of Police, SP,  and asked us to speak to the SP.  We spoke to the SP who then appointed several police teams to assist us in the rescue.

Raniya rescued

Later that day, the police and our team proceeded to the dera.  We had to employ different strategies due to the earlier tip offs.  At 4:30 pm the brothel was raided.  Since the village was crowded we were able to rescue Raniya without any mob gathering and getting violent.

The two brothel keepers,  Raniya’s parents, are absconding.  The police escorted Raniya to the police station.  The police registered a First Information Report.  Raniya was taken for her medical examination and then placed in a temporary shelter (One Stop Centre).

On 18th October, Raniya was produced before the Child Welfare Committee and her 164 statement (164 statement is a voluntary statement in which the victim shares her experience at the brothel and names of the accused) was recorded.
