On 18th April 2024, our social workers visited the Anti Human Trafficking Unit, AHTU,  Kolkata. They shared information about a suspected minor being forced into prostitution at a private brothel in Metiabruz, Kolkata and requested them to initiate a raid. The officer said he would verify the information and keep us updated.

On 22nd and 23th April, social workers met with the chairperson of West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights, WBCPCR,  and shared information about the victims.  The WBCPCR agreed to support us and we discussed various rescue strategies.

On 24th April, we visited the AHTU. The AHTU scheduled the raid for 26th April.

On 25th April, a representative from WBCPCR called to confirm the rescue for 26th April.   Later that evening we received intel that the victim left the private brothel and went out of town.

We waited for the victim to return.

On 21st May, we received intel that the victim had returned to the private brothel.  We contacted the AHTU.  Due to a few legal issues the AHTU needed special permission from the Court to proceed with the rescue operation.

On 22nd May at 2:48 pm the police and our team raided the private brothel.  We found victim Nasheeda  in one of the rooms.   The brothel keeper was at the private brothel with her three children (13 year old daughter and two sons aged seven and two).  The police arrested the brothel keeper.  After collecting all the evidence, the victim, accused, the accused’ children and our team proceeded to the police station.

There was some confusion over Nasheeda’s age; her school certificate showed her age as 20 whereas her Aadhar card showed her age as 17. After speaking to the WBCPCR, the police ordered that Nasheeda be placed in a shelter home temporarily. We accompanied Nasheeda for her medical tests and then to a shelter home.

The accused was kept in police custody while her three children were placed in different children’s homes.
