On 18th May we learned about Pakiza, a Bangladeshi victim forced into prostitution at different spas across Surat, Gujarat. Her trafficker was her ex husband who married her and then trafficked her to India.

The three other weary victims

On 19th May we met the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Surat,  with the evidence we had gathered about Pakiza. He quickly assembled a team which consisted of officers from the Anti Human Trafficking Unit. The police wanted to initiate a raid that day itself but Pakiza was not present at the spa.

On 20th May as soon as we received confirmation that the victim Pakiza was at the spa, the police and our team raided the brothel. We found Pakiza and three other Bangladeshi women who were forced into prostitution.  The spa manager and Pakiza’s husband are absconding.

The victims were taken to the police station and shared their details with the police who then filed a First Information Report. Pakiza and the three other victims were taken for their medicals and then taken to a one stop centre, a temporary shelter for women. After a few days, they were placed in a shelter home.
