Early afternoon on 15h March 2024, we got a distress call from the Child Welfare Committee, CWC,  in Moradabad, UP. There was a minor girl at the Moradabad railway station who the police had found in an unconscious state. The CWC took Soniya, the victim, to the hospital. Soniya appeared weak and frail. She shared that her father had sold her to a trafficker.  The CWC asked us if we would investigate Soniya’s case.

Yes. We definitely were interested in investigating Soniya’s case. Later that evening, we left for Moradabad.

On Sunday, we met Soniya at the hospital. Though she looked sad and weak, she shared her story with us.

In October 2023, her father took her to Garstin Bastion Road in Delhi, one of Delhi’s largest red light areas and sold her to a trafficker for Rs 75,000. The trafficker Sohail, was a male in his mid 20’s.  Sohail took Soniya to a brothel which was being run by a woman named Baby. For two weeks, Baby gave Soniya food and also pretty clothes to wear. Once Soniya was a little settled in, Baby told her that she was bought to have sex with customers.  A terrified Soniya said NO. Soniya was beaten severely till she finally relented.

Soniya was forced to have sex with nine – 10 customers a day. This became her daily routine for months. One day, Ajay, a male relative, came to the brothel. It wasn’t to rescue her. Ajay bought Soniya from Baby the brothel keeper for Rs 15000. He took her to a room that he rented and sexually exploited her for two months.  Ajay told Soniya that he would marry her.

Soniya missed her monthly cycle and after doing a pregnancy test, discovered she was pregnant. She told Ajay that she was pregnant.  On 8th March, Soniya started having severe abdominal pain. She pleaded with Ajay to get her tablets to stop the pain.  Ajay started to give Soniya tablets multiple times a day.  Ajay then disappeared.  With the little money Soniya had, she  booked the cheapest train ticket and boarded a train to Moradabad.

When Soniya reached Moradabad station, she felt extremely unwell and fainted.  One passerby saw an unconscious Soniya on the floor and called the police. When the police found Soniya, they called the CWC who came and took charge of the situation and admitted Soniya to the hospital.

Sadly, Soniya had a miscarriage. After a few days in the hospital, her condition has improved, she will be discharged from the hospital later today.  Tomorrow we will accompany Soniya to the CWC and then together we will go to the police station where she will file a First Information Report against all the people who exploited Soniya, including her father who sold her into prostitution.
