Uma, a 26-year-old was befriended by a man in October 2020 in West Bengal. They fell in love and eloped to Mumbai. They got married in Mumbai in November 2020 after which, her husband asked her to dress up and service customers in a massage parlor. She was threatened but refused to oblige. After the ordeal, her husband told her that they could move to Secunderabad to begin a new life but he actually intended to sell her to another trafficker in the southern city. On her way to Secunderabad, a relative with whom she was having a phone conversation warned her that she was in danger and asked her to get down. She got down at Sangareddy, a town in Telangana, and approached the police for help.

She narrated her story to the police and was immediately placed in a one-stop center. The Telangana police informed the West Bengal police who referred the case to Freedom Firm. Shelly, Freedom Firm’s social worker, traveled to Secunderabad in January and brought Uma home.

Today, Uma is safe at home and our social workers are in regular touch with her, proving life skill training and counselling. Uma is a skilled Zari designer and we are encouraging her to turn the skill into profitable work in the coming days.
